Thriving in Online Classes: Communication, Participation, and Academic Success Strategies

Because it’s not just about how to say things—it’s about how to think, write, respond, and manage your role as a learner in a digital environment.

• Online communication is written and asynchronous, giving you more time to think through your responses compared to in-person classes.

• Discussion posts count toward your grade, so follow your instructor’s guidelines for how many to post, how long they should be, and what kind of content is expected.

• Support your ideas with sources when needed—just like in papers, using course materials or outside research can make your posts stronger and more persuasive.

• Use the written record to your advantage by reviewing past posts, referring back to earlier class discussions, and connecting your responses to what you've learned.

• Keep posts timely, clear, and labeled as yours, and always aim for thoughtful, well-organized writing that adds to the conversation.
